Adoption is a lifelong journey of parenting. We provide workshops/talks for prospective adopters to be prepared for adoption as well as for adoptive parents to be equipped in their role as parents. A ‘one year equipping programme’ has been designed for this purpose and it includes the following sessions (frequency of each topic varies in a year):
Talk - Preparing for adoption
Talk - Attachment building and parenting adopted children
Talk - Disclosure : Talking with your child about adoption*
Panel Forum with small group discussions- ‘Sensitive questions, practical answers’
Panel Forum with small group discussions – more on attachment, discipline & parenting
Panel Forum with small group discussions – hearing from the adoptees
* With effect from 1 February 2007, the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) has made it compulsory for all adoption applicants who wish to legalise the adoption in Singapore to attend a workshop on adoption disclosure to familiarise themselves with the rationale, benefits and ways of early disclosure to their adopted child. Applicants are required to attend such a workshop before MCYS makes a recommendation to the Court on their adoption petition.
