A heartwarming story by a couple who adopted their daughter from China

We are very thankful to the staff of TOUCH Adoption Services (TAS) for their dedication and support as they walked with us through the adoption journey of our daughter.

We are glad that TAS guided us through the whole process, right from the first meeting with Deirdre who gave us a clear picture and useful advice concerning adoption. This helped us greatly in setting realistic expectations and making informed decisions. The various adoption workshops conducted by TAS had definitely been invaluable in enlightening us on the many issues related to adoption that we needed to think and work through as we proceeded with the adoption process. In our preparation for the home study, we were pretty anxious as we anticipated a daunting and grueling interview. After going through it, we really appreciated how Deirdre and Wei Lei had put us at ease throughout.

Our trip to China was a wonderful and memorable one. We were privileged to be accompanied by Seok Bee and Deirdre, both staff of TAS. We truly enjoyed their friendship and support during the entire trip. At the end of the year, we attended an annual get-together for adoptive parents, organised by TAS. We appreciate TAS for providing the opportunity for us to meet up again with the other adoptive parents who went with us to China as we feel a certain special bond with them. We are looking forward to the yearly gathering as we would also like our daughter to meet and befriend the adopted children too. After all, they came from the same orphanage (and also once shared the same surname!).

We are very blessed that TAS has not only fulfilled our dream of becoming parents, but has also given a child a home and a family where she can receive love, care and security.

A testimony by a member of TOUCH Adoptive Families Network (TAFNET)
- Kara Ekeberg

The benefits of TAFNET can often be accumulative and ongoing, not always so obvious and transparent. When I first joined, my child was just a toddler and I was wondering what benefits the subject of disclosure, for example, could really have for us. However, armed with good reading materials, some suggested answers (by the group, social workers and guest speakers) I am eternally grateful for the TAFNET advice when the day finally arrived for us. Sure enough, at three and a half years old, (as advised would probably happen) she asked me if she was adopted. Instead of being shocked, frightened and tongue tied, I was able to answer her with confidence, pride and love… An amazing calm settled on me and I knew that I am now armed for the next batch of questions, easy or difficult, with great support, advice and love from TAFNET.

"We joined TAFNET when our daughter was just 8 months old and ever since then, we have obtained tremendous emotional support from the facilitators & fellow members. Those with older children have given us a very good insight of where our relationship with our daughter may head as well as solutions to tackle possible problems. We definitely have benefited from being a part of TAFNET and would highly recommend it to perspective and existing adoptive families."
